Ethical Issues and Regulatory Bodies
- Those which take into consideration offending anyone, in anyway (e.g. words, images, symbols which cause distress or offend)
- relates to professional practice of those in the media
- There are organisations for each media sector which work hard at ensuring good professional practice and ethical issues are part of this
Leveson Inquiry
- Investigated hacking by journalists of peoples mobile phones
- Invasion of privacy
- always codes of practice - a standard of how to work ethically
- looks into reporters hacking phones to find stories and then report on them, its an invasion of privacy
- They take the risk because they wanted the story
Defining Ethical Issues in MEDIA
- doing the right /moral thing
- considering the ethical impact of a media product - do not offend or bother those consuming it
- ethics such as - codes of practice (rule book), privacy rights, public interest, levels of violence and representation of groups

- working ethically to protect the interests of people such as those from minorities, people who are vulnerable

- Sector regulatory body - they set the guidelines and rules
- Breaks ethical issues -it's 'pulled'/taken down
- Morrisons burger ad - promotes unhealthy eating amongst children
- Philadelphia ad - promotes child abandonment
- Barclays ad - poor/negative representation of foreign police (racism)

- This regulatory body regulates the work of newspapers and publishing/magazines

- ofcom checks what is broadcast on Tv and Radio
